Trying’ to Quit Smoking isn’t Good Enough
‘Try’ is a very weak word. Just ask any coach or personal trainer. They’ll both tell you that you won’t get very far by just trying. You have to commit. Without a totally committed level of thinking, it becomes very difficult to be successful. The same goes for quitting smoking.
Whether it is using the ‘try’ word when convincing yourself to quit or when talking to your friends and family, I have to warn you, don’t do it. You are doing yourself a disservice and potentially setting yourself up for failure.
Need an example? How about this. My wife has a fear of roller coasters and I don’t know where it came from. She’s not afraid of heights and not really afraid of speed, so why this is, I still haven’t figured it out. And the funny thing is she can’t tell me why either.
And during the rare times my son and I have been persuasive enough to get her into the line, it is always tempered with ‘I’ll try’. This gives her the opportunity to reneg on her offer without too much teasing. And she always does.
So how does she get out of it and still feel good about herself? Because she only said she would ‘try’ and that doesn’t really count. The same goes when you are the path to becoming a non-smoker. By only trying, you are leaving yourself an easy exit down the road. And this isn’t something you want to do.
I encourage you to seek out any smoker who has failed in their quest to quit and in almost all of the cases they will say these exact words to you – I tried! And perhaps they might even say that they soon plan to ‘try’ again.
So what you need to do if you are to commit is remove the word ‘try’ completely. Use a statement like this. ‘I am going to quit to better my health. For the betterment of my family. For the betterment of my finances. No exceptions.’ Can you see the difference? You must state the exact reasons for why you want to quit. With no allowances for weakness or failure.
Put this commitment in writing. Carry it with you everywhere. Have a copy in your vehicle; distributed around the house. Anywhere you can see it to remind yourself of what your true desires are. It will make all the difference in becoming a non-smoker.
